1200 x 450 x 100mm Kingspan Thermawall TW50 Cavity Insulation (Per 5 Boards - 2.7m2)
Partial fill insulation designed for use in cavities where a clear air gap is required.
Benefits of using PIR insulation
- High performance 100mm rigid thermoset insulation –
thermal conductivity 0.022 W/m.K - Clear cavity is maintained – resists moisture penetration
- Low emissivity foil facings are resistant to the passage of water vapour and double the thermal resistance of the cavity
Multi-purpose insulation boards
Although primarily used for insulating masonry cavities; Kingspan TW50 100mm can also be used in other applications where a smaller sized board is required. This high perfomance rigid urethane insulation can be used in between battens to line out external walls. It also comes in handy when insulating loft spaces where access is difficult. This is providing current building regulations are adhered to.
Is PIR insulation easy to cut?
Easy to cut to the required size with a normal handsaw to friction fit in between even the most awkward of spaces. When cutting and installing 100mm Kingspan TW50 insulation board, ensure that any gaps are filled with an expanding urethane sealant so there are no cold spots. On thinner boards up to around 50mm, less mess is made if a sharp-bladed knife is used. As it can be quite a messy job, it is advisable to wear safety clothing, especially as dust mask at the very least!
The technical stuff!
Polyisocyanurate, or 'PIR' as it is more commonly known is one of the most thermally efficient insulants in the construction market at present.
During the manufacturing process, the chemical reaction of combining liquid polyol and isocynates produces a wet, tacky foam which then hardens and sets in any desired form. When producing sheets of insulation, this leads to finer tolerances and consistent thicknesses.
Is PIR Insulation waterproof?
Ultimately, no. PIR insulation, composed of closed-cell foam, is not fully waterproof. The tiny gas-filled cells within the foam, while providing excellent thermal performance, are not entirely impervious to moisture. To mitigate this, PIR boards are equipped with foil facings on both sides. Should the foil become wet during transit, it is imperative to allow the boards to dry naturally indoors prior to installation.
